Ruff – Calidris pugnax

This is quite a peculiar bird as it has three different sorts of males or rather appearance of males. When in the mating season the majority of ruff males grows a spectacular breeding plumage. Most of the ruffs grow dark plumage but others have light plumage and a minority of the male ruffs looks like the females. This ruff is seen at Högholmen – Korkeasaari in Helsinki zoo in Finland in the middle of November 2016. The legs are light orange so it could be a female. More about it on wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruff

    • Thank you! We read the sign and realized this was a peculiar bird. I would like to see this bird in the wild or if I could return to the zoo in the spring. I wish you a wonderful weekend!
